I have used graphite lube ( such as lock-eze) on plugs since my first 1600 in 1981. Threads are clean upon removal. Never a problem.

Any problem with resistor plugs WR8dc instead of W8dc? I use a Bosch red coil w/ pertronix and std. wires / connectors.

I used to run the taller one without any problems. I would check clearance with hood insulation, hood adjustment andmotor mounts to be sure.

It seems to me that the flow is regulated by the speed of the pump impeller. I would worry that the engine would not heat up quickly enough with an open thermostat.
