looks to me like you were over-rich for some time. the single solex is a stand up carb but who knows, your float might have been out of balance for years.

i run solex phh (ti) and don't have any clearance trouble with a stock (no dismantle) pump. if you have the ti manifolds there should be no issue as the angle is enough for plenty of clearance.
