MAC address filtering is an important piece of the puzzle, but remember that a cheap wireless sniffer can pick out the MAC out of the air and the hacker can then use this MAC for access next time.

I don't know about the location, but I'd guess that wrapping plastic around the heat-sink fins on it would definitely defeat the purpose of them. They need some air flow to get rid of the heat.

Our E46 has a build date of 12/98. The instrument cluster SII reset procedure doesn't work. Also, trying the reset pins 7 and 19 on the round diagnostic connector didn't work last time ...

Nope. The devices itself just receives timing signals from GPS satellites, and determines your location from the differences in the signals. There's no monthly subscription or anything.
