Sorry to hear it, I went to his site more than several times to read up on some vintage bikes and components. One of the few fairly comprehensive sites on such things.

Just a thought, I'd look at the nut on top of the strut first, being that was the last repair made. Make sure it's tight and doesn't turn the shaft of the strut insert when trying.

Does the engine have a good ground? When you test the plug, earth it to the body and the engine and see if either work?

I agree with Jack - I'd remove the locking assembly from the door and degrease and clean it before applying more grease. The old grease builds up on there and make it hard to operate.
