I also started comparing the 320i trans w/ the 323i trans and noticed two significant things:
[list]1.  I cannot find the connection for the reverse lights.  (Update - Found,  just behind the bell housing on top of the trans.)
2.  The speedo drive gear and housing is missing on the 323i.  Looks like the drive gear from the 320i will fit, but the housing is too big.  I've looked all over the internet (realoem included) but parts listing for the 323i trans are hard to find.  May have to put in an email to Blunt.[/list]

Looks like I scored with this electric pusher fan (12") that was used on the old a/c system - I'll use it in front of the new radiator:
