Okay so here we go. I'm a major noob so my apologies before hand. It all starts with me needing a daily driver. My friend (also a member here) has a 74 02 and I've always kinda wanted one ( I was a e30/e36 guy ). So the search began. I looked at a few... Some good but a little out of the budget, and some.... Oh so bad (as well as the ones selling them). Then I'm told about this forum. I look a bit more and find the car I have now here in the for sale section. It's a 1972, pretty much original mechanically. It's been repainted a non factory metallic blue( looked good though). Okay so it is a salvage title and I knew that going into it. Purchased the car with full disclosure and a lot of extra parts :). It was a good deal. The car had been hit in the rear and it showed but had been repaired. Well let's use the term repaired verrrrry loosely. The car runs but doesn't stop ( the brakes are all new but need to be completed with two rear bleeder screws that I'm having a hard time getting except from the local dealer whom I will not deal with for poor no wait terrible service at the parts desk plus they insulted the 02's)

Continuing... Anyways it's a cool project that I thought I would just get running and then address the body issues later. So I've had the car a few weeks now and have done things here and there... I get this notion to fix a dent in the passenger rear quarter close to the tail thinking "I'll just hammer and dolly this little thing out so ita not so bad". And whomp! A huge piece off the quarter panel falls off. WTH?! Upon closer inspection it's a huge piece of bondo that's about a half inch thick. WTH?! I'm a little dismayed at that moment. Again I had full disclosure so nothing ill toward the PO that sold it to me... He's been great! My curiosity got the better of me. I decide to look a little further... Awww crap! And then a little further... Awww crap. Okay so maybe it was a little stronger than that :). Half the quarter was bondo and about half an inch thick through most of it. I'm not a pro body man but as I uncovered the panel to bare metal I see no reason for the bondo at all! The panel is straight save a 1/4" ding right behind the wheel. Sigh so the curiosity gods tell me to go further.... I start to check the tail and the side that was obviously repaired. Holy sh$&!!!

Okay I calm myself down a bit and keep trucking through it. Let's just say that my car is pretty much bare metal from the rear wheels now and about 60lbs lighter. Okay so I'm exaggerating a bit it's only 55lbs. Whoever "repaired" this car basically committed the biggest bondo sin of all time. The rear panel wasn't straightened per say. There was bondo on both sides making it appear straight. They built upand created the whole shape. The drivers quarter again wasn't either. Bondo on both sides and get this... The outer area had parts that were over an inch thick!! Geeez!!! I had to now visit the white box god that holds the beer. A few cases later :) j/k although I had thought about it I only had the one. I dove back into this mess and decided I'm gonna start fixing it. Pull out the trusty hammer and dollies and bang out some frustration. Oh and by the way they didn't match up the spare tire well and the rear panel or the quarter very well. I bang bang bang and then decide that I want to fix the inch gap between the spare tire and the quarter panel. That now involved cutting and tweaking the trunk latch support and the brace that separates the spare and the gas tank.

I've now got most of it somewhat straight or at least where I will only need a couple pounds of bondo. Here a link to photos before, during, and after.

Congratulations! Man, all I can say is that I got a lot of respect for you. You seem to be a talented body guy and at least you know what your doing so I know you'll knock it out and make it look good the right way. I really like that respray color. I know that there is definitely some scary bondo work under my paint that i'm way to afraid to investigate the way you did. I'm just going to let it be until i have to do something about it.

Thanks for that support. Like I said, I'm not a pro body man but I have had the chance of learning how to do basic stuff. I might have to go the route of heating and shrinking the metal a little to try and fix a couple of nice creases in the drivers quarter. I've also been looking into using lead body filler? The fun part is that once I finish the back half, I will then have to attack the front drivers area,as you can see the grill doesn't match up to tue fender and I have an airdam that I am thinking about adding. When I mock that up it's evident that the front isn't straight either. Sigh....

Haha I know whos car that is!
You bought that from someone in San Jose! Brian?
Cool guy!

No worries. I find more and more bondo on my car everyday.
Rolled the fenders. Holy goodness that broke my heart. All the bondo started cracking. I dont have the guts to do body work so Im leaving it as is for now haha

Good luck man

Yup that's where I got this bondo mobile.... I mean fantastic car from.... Haha! Brian is a terrific guy. I would definitely deal with him again and will remain in contact with him as I do this project. Anyone wanting to donate to the disastrous bondo removal fund is welcome to send parts or funds. :)

Ok so no major progress yet. Still working on the body trying to get it straight. Not sure if it's gonna be possible without several bondo sins but we will see. Thinking about two tone paint scheme. Leaving the top the same blue but painting the lower half silver from the trim down. Not sure yet. Any ideas?
